Image Source: For decades, a main staple of horror movies was the presence of a young, nubile damsel in distress; what would Friday the 13th or Halloween be without an Alice or a Laurie? In recent years, the genre has thankfully begun to explore new territory. As much as I loved the original run of the film franchise – for the most part – it was impossible to deny that simply burnt out moviegoers by releasing one flick per year over the span of seven, or that the series collapsed under its own weight with the haphazardly put together Saw: The Final Chapter, an entry that confounds me to this day. Having assumed that the property had spent enough time on the shelf, the studio was more than happy to take another stab at it with last year’s, which, most fortunate for them, was a runaway success for all intents and purposes. Reports placed its budget at $10 million, so to hear that it raked in over $100 million at the worldwide box office means that sequel talk isn’t all that far-fetched. It’s been since we last heard anything about Saw: Legacy, the 8th entry in the franchise that was created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell back in 2004. What we reported back then was that Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger – the same scriptwriting duo behind Piranha 3D, Piranha 3DD, and Sorority Row – were writing the script and that Wan and Whannell would be acting as executive producers. No plot was revealed and no other information was provided. It’s been completely quiet Today breaks the silence as it looks like the sequel will be filming in Toronto this September, according to a listing found on, which is a site that supports a union of stage, theater and movie employees/operators. Additionally, the listing states that Dan Heffner and Oren Koules will be producing the movie. The two have been producers on every Saw film, so it’s nice to see them come back! Alas, no director is listed but we’re looking into the situation to see what we can figure out! While we reach out, where would you like to see the Saw series go next? Should it tackle Jigsaw’s beginnings? Should it move to a completely different town where some sociopath takes up the sick cause on his/her own? Personally, I’d love to see it done without a ton of gore and instead focusing more on the horror of the situation, like the first one did. Give me tension over intestines any day of the week! I give SAW 3D a lot of shit mainly because it was very weak and shallow for a supposedly “grand finale” that should’ve wrapped every thing up. If it was just another sequel I don’t think many people would bash it as much as they do. But you’re right, Saw 3D had some great traps and some fun kills- the opening was indeed brilliant. SAW 3D was very much an entertaining popcorn movie- though that’s all as it lacks the depth of the others. But in all honesty, SAW 3D is at least a fun movie to watch when you just wanna turn your brain off and enjoy some carnage. I expect Saw: Legacy will have a popcorn feel to it as well judging by the writers, I just hope it’s a little more story/character driven. Saw VI is my favorite one in the series. I think it had the goriest and craziest traps. Come on, pumped full of hydrochloric acid (or whatever it was) through needles digging into every part of your body— who came up with that s#it? What I liked most about part VI though is that it brought everything together. I really got a sense of closure. All my questions were answered. And I was like, this is it. It’s over but I’m damn glad to have been apart of it from the beginning. Then SAW3D came out and I asked, where could it possible go from there? The answer: nowhere. The “twist” was something that everyone saw coming since Saw 2. That’s why I’m looing at this with excitement and reluctance. It’s been a while since I’ve seen them all, but I’ll have to look deeply into all of them to find some angle that will get me really excited for a new one. Let’s start with the title. “Legacy.” Will someone carry on Jigsaw’s legacy like Amanda and Hoffman did to an extent? But who would carry the torch now? That’s what I can’t wait to find out. Hopefully we get a plot synopses soon and I hope they truly market this film well- maybe now SAW can take back October since Paranormal Activity is dead(well for now at least). I’m seriously craving more films like SAW, Final Destination, Friday The 13th, Halloween ect for a break from all of the paranormal films and franchises that have been dominating the genre so far this decade. I could literally go for 5 more SAW films at this point lol. As long as they were at least watchable. So many mixed emotions reading this. On one hand I’m a HUGE Saw fan and was pretty much obsessed with the series when it was airing. Saw 3D left a huge bad taste in my mouth and I’m hoping that this film can help redeem the series. I’m not really excited about the writers involved, I really wish they got Melton and Dunstan to write the new movie. Either way they need to nail this movie out of the park, and I’m extremely nervous that this is going to be horrible. I think that what they’ll do is a semi-reboot. Maybe a few characters here and there will be the same, but we’ll probably have a new killer that we won’t know who they are until the end and maybe they’ll be working with someone from a previous Saw movie. Hoping for the best, but I’m going to keep my expectations low. I have a feeling they’re just gonna go balls to the walls with the traps and kind of forget about the main story line. Edit: I think the director they pick can really make or break this movie. I wish they would go with James Wan but it seems like he’s too busy to probably do it. It would be great if they could go back to Darren Bousman or someone else involved in the series. I’m pretty squeamish with these movies nowadays, but I’d really love to see them equip people with traps and then set them free. Make it like a scavenger hunt, where the victims have more than a minute to solve it, but they have an entire city to scour. No more warehouses. An opening scene similar to the opening of Scream 2 and Saw 3D would be awesome – where someone is let loose crying for help, but people think it’s just a stunt. Then the trap goes off and it sets the film in motion. From then on people are aware they’re not stunts, but the traps are obviously too well-engineered for anyone to do anything. And instead of focusing on cops as the protagonists, have the cops recruit an engineer to help.

Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for [Wolverine].' Post-production [ ]. Original plate (top), animation pass (center) and the completed shot of the Silver Samurai (bottom) In October 2012, it was reported that The Wolverine would be converted to, making it the first 3D release for one of 20th Century Fox's Marvel films. Visual effects for the film were completed by, (RSP), Iloura, and Shade VFX. In order to recreate the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, RSP studied natural phenomena such as volcanoes, instead of relying on archived footage of atomic blasts, and recreated the effects digitally. They also replaced the Sydney cityscape on the horizon with views of Nagasaki. The walking bear featured in the Yukon scenes was created with computer graphics by Weta Digital, while Make-Up Effects Group built a 12 foot tall bear, that was used for shots of the creature dying after it had been hit by poisoned arrows fired by hunters. For a fight scene taking place on top of a speeding bullet train, the actors and stunt performers filmed on wires above a set piece surrounded by a. The moving background, filmed on an elevated freeway in Tokyo, was added later. Weta Digital visual effects supervisor said the team adopted a ' method', explaining 'But instead of having a big panoramic cam on top of a van, we built a rig that had eight 45 degree angle [cameras] that gave us massive resolution driving down all the massive lanes of the freeway. We let a bit of air out of the tires of the van and kept a constant 60 kilometers an hour. So if we shot at 48 fps we just needed to speed up the footage by 10 times to give us the 300 kilometers an hour required.' The Silver Samurai, rendered by Weta Digital, was based on a model that had been and chrome painted using electrolysis. Stunt performer, wearing a suit, stood on stilts while filming as the Silver Samurai. Rangi's performance was then used to animate the digital character. Hill said the main challenge was creating the Silver Samurai's highly reflective surface, 'He's pretty much chrome. We were worried that he was going to look incredibly digital and that it was going to be very hard to make him look solid and real and not just like a mirrored surface.' The original assembly cut of the film ran around two hours and 35 minutes. The mid-credit scene was written by and shot by the crew, though Mangold directed the scene. Music [ ] In September 2012,, who previously scored James Mangold's film (2007), announced that he had signed on to The Wolverine. Following Mangold's and inspirations for the film, Beltrami explained, 'I think I do every movie as a western whether it is or not, so there’s definitely some of the spaghetti western influence on my music throughout the score, and I guess throughout a lot of my work. I wouldn’t say there was a particular movie that influenced me more than something else. There was nothing that I was trying to mimic or anything.' On associating sounds with the film's primary location, Beltrami said, 'I think the last thing that Jim [Mangold] and I wanted to do was Japanese music associated with Japanese places. There's a reference; I do use Japanese instruments, [but] not really in a traditional way.' The score was performed by an 85-piece ensemble of the at the Newman Scoring Stage at 20th Century Fox. On, the film has a score of 60 out of 100, based on reviews from 43 critics, indicating 'mixed or average reviews'. Audiences polled by gave the film an average grade of 'A-', on a scale from A+ to F. Of the gave it a grade of 'B+', praising Jackman's performance as 'strong, solid entertainment' and 'a serious, sometimes dark and deliberately paced story.' Christy Lemire, writing for the website of, said that the film 'features some breathtakingly suspenseful action sequences, exquisite production and costume design and colorful characters, some of whom register more powerfully than others.' Film critic Peter Debruge called the film 'an entertaining and surprisingly existential digression from his usual X-Men exploits. Though Wolvie comes across a bit world-weary and battle-worn by now, Jackman is in top form, taking the opportunity to test the character’s physical and emotional extremes. Fans might’ve preferred bigger action or more effects, but Mangold does them one better, recovering the soul of a character whose near-immortality made him tiresome.' James Buchanan of gave it 3 out of 4 stars, calling it 'A rare comic-to-film adaptation that doesn't sacrifice substance for the sake of thrilling action.' Scott Collura of praised the film giving it an 8.5 out of 10 and stated, ' The Wolverine is a stand alone adventure for the classic character that reminds us that there's more to this genre than universe-building and crossovers. [The] story paints a deep and compelling portrait of Logan, a haunted character that Jackman still finds new ways to play all these years later.' Of felt that despite the film's final act 'sink[ing] into CGI shit', Jackman's performance 'still has the juice' and Mangold's directing 'shows style and snap.' Conversely, Henry Barnes of derided the film, giving it 2 out of 5 stars and stating, 'Hugh Jackman's sixth time out in the claws and hair combo is looking increasingly wearied, as the backstory gets more complicated and the action gets duller and flatter.' Joe Neumaier of the New York offered a similar view, saying 'Hugh Jackman has the role of the mutant superhero down pat, but the rest of the film is the same old slice and dice.' It’s falling difficult, however it (and lady bird among others) must get its mojo lower back as soon as the Oscar nominations roll in. Woody Allen’s marvel Wheel can’t depend upon Oscar glory, as it’ll quit its fourth weekend with simply $1.165m after losing 87% for a $60k Fri-solar weekend. Each murder on the Orient express and Daddy’s domestic 2 will give up the vacation weekend with $ninety nine.4m home.emember,” a father says to a son. “Our hearts and our bodies are given to us handiest as soon as. And before you realize it, your coronary heart is worn out. And, as in your frame, there comes a point whilst no person seems at it, much less wants to come near it. Right now, there’s sorrow. Don’t kill it, and with it the pleasure you’ve felt.” If the Luca Guadagnino movie “call Me through Your call” wins an Academy Award, it’ll be in element due to that unspeakably smooth scene wherein a father, a father along with his very own struggles and regrets, tries to inform his gay, 17-12 months-old son that he isn’t by myself. Even though the screenplay to the movie is by means of James Ivory, this piece of debate comes pretty without delay from the 2007 Andre Aciman novel upon which the movie is based. It’s pretty an awful lot a restatement of a philosophy often related to the English romantic poet John Keats, who wrote inside the poem “Ode on a Grecian Urn”:In different words, a number of the many paradoxes of life is the fact which you can not experience joy with out additionally understanding sorrow. One always accompanies the alternative. Both are better than feeling and experiencing nothing, or even just running inside a chance-loose middle floor. That is what maximum of us need to train our kids. Of course, they would must switch off their telephones first. Watch “call Me by Your name,” a film set within the early Nineteen Eighties and centered on an academic own family, and also you’ll sincerely be struck with the aid of the quantity of circle of relatives communication occurring. Food are lengthy, slow affairs, peppered with intergenerational chatter. When the 17-12 months-antique protagonist (performed by Timothee Chalamet) desires to use a smartphone, he has to sit in the hallway on an extended, corded affair, so public that his parents can at the least half-hear his conversations. You could bear in mind what that turned into like. Truly, they have already got a experience of what is going on with him: He spends plenty time simply sitting together with his mother and father, speaking. It’s now not that the own family conversations are easy, but the film makes clear they are taking place and perhaps saving this child’s existence, or, as a minimum, drastically elevating the chances of his future happiness. They’re occurring in “woman hen” too. That movie — a probable rival at Oscar time — is set in a totally distinct time and area, Sacramento, Calif., in 2002. But there were no iPhones around then both. Few invasive monitors to close humans off from those they love. Intentionally or not, each of these movies display some thing about the fee we ought to pay for our attention to our feeds. Like “name Me through Your name,” “girl chook” is a coming-of-age tale that revolves around a 17-yr-vintage — in this situation, the title individual, played by using Saoirse Ronan. Her relationships together with her mother and father are extra tough and extra primary to the film. But they’re all, at the least, speakme all of the time. Indeed it’s the rhythms of the mom-daughter conversations (Laurie Metcalf plays the mother) that dominate the movie and the characters’ recognition. Even if they’re arguing, they’re unmistakably alive. Greta Gerwig, who wrote and directed the film, without a doubt knows how many family fights clearly are repetitions of battles previously fought, but she additionally argues on this movie that even opposed chatter between a young person and a parent is a long way higher than no communicate at all. She is right about that. The entirety is nourishment for lady hen, all a part of her studying that “splendor is truth and truth, beauty, this is all Ye recognize on the earth, and all ye need to realize.” she will take it from there herself. It’s the vacations. Might also you and all around you strength down, appearance each different in the eye, pay attention and communicate. Chris Jones is a Tribune critic. When a crime has been committed against your family, the human heart longs for or revenge. Characters in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” are engaged in a constant struggle to grasp satisfaction as compensation for their terrible loss. Watching this movie is akin to slowing down for a couple hours to linger over the details of a bloody car wreck. Mildred Harris () was the single mother of two teens, until her daughter, Angela, was and —her body mutilated by fire. Eight months later, Sheriff Willoughby () still has no evidence to catch the killer(s), so Harris decides to spur some action. She purchases a month’s worth of billboard rights to display 3 messages designed to embarrass the police, and the whole movie deals with the fallout from her actions. Mildred begins feeling wrath from the people of Ebbing who don’t like the billboards, because the sheriff is well-liked, plus he’s dying from pancreatic. Her ex-husband threatens, and the surviving teenage son scorns her. Even a priest comes by to offer unsought counsel: “If you just attended more” Despite a stream of uncomfortable, profane confrontations, the story holds interest because Mildred refuses to accept people’s actions against her. She may be wrong to humiliate the police, but viewers may also wonder what lengths they would go to find a child killer. Turning the other is not part of her ethos. She’s like a wolverine who’s lost a kit. Watching several confused, bitter people find creative/strange ways to destroy each other can be morbidly entertaining, and I kept remembering the Coen bothers’ “”—not only because of McDormand’s central performance in each, but also because the 2 movies’ musical scores were created by Carter Burwell. The plot cycle of violent circumstances also echoes several other Coen movies. During a rare moment of awe and beauty, Mildred. Though left unsaid, her angry words and actions throughout embody the oft-heard protest: “If God exists, how and why would He let evil happen?”. For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” —Hebrews 10:30 • How can I know what is RIGHT and WRONG? • How can I discern whether a particular activity is WRONG? • What is SIN AND WICKEDNESS? • What is GOODNESS? • What is RIGHTEOUSNESS? • —read the story of a former Israeli soldier and an ex-PLO fighter who proved peace is possible—but only through Jesus Christ • What makes Mildred’s revenge attempts complicated is that the real killer of her daughter isn’t readily apparent, so her tactics just drag down many others caught up in the wake of her fury. Maybe the police should be doing more, but what? When you don’t know God’s, how else should you respond when faced with terrible, like the of your child? Filmmaker and Irish playwright Martin McDonagh doesn’t offer us God-informed answers. I thought the movie strained credibility several times with its too-tidy series of coincidences, leading the audience to believe one thing—only to pull the rug out later. The movie delights in Mildred’s facial expressions and profane one-liners in response to conflict, because this appeals to our sense of. We root for her because she’s been hurt so badly. If you enjoy revenge fantasies like “” or “” (also starring McDormand), you might enjoy “Three Billboards,” but I would still caution you that this kind of story can make your soul sick. If you’re reading this review, you may have in, so you understand that is not the end of life, but it’s the beginning of something new (see and ). All of the characters in this movie (unrealistically, given its Bible Belt setting) have little or no in anything eternal, so they’re ready to kill themselves and others to make their points. The world may consider this entertaining, at the moment, but my guess is that many Christian viewers will leave theaters feeling like they’ve sat through emotional and literal carnage. In Bruges chief Martin McDonagh has set down what could be the principal genuine winning hand at the 74th Biennale with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and while there's very still time for another person to secure the current year's Golden Lion, that doesn't stop the Englishman's most recent content from being just about all that you could request in a screenplay. It's surely not as outright a comic drama as the executive's last two highlights, however Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri by the by still has the majority of McDonagh's remarkable mind. Furthermore, as the title presumably recommends, you ought to make certain to expect something somewhat particular or extraordinary. Truth be told, at to begin with, it practically appears as though McDonagh is beginning off with a somewhat uniquely ill humored show. The primary thing we find in this film is the male/female looking Mildred Hayes chugging along an overlooked street in thick, profound haze. At the foot of a green valley, she pulls up her auto and gazes long and hard at three mammoth bulletins in succession along the street. Blue grass music plays delicately out of sight, and the camera takes after her contemplative look to what resembles a graveyard of old publicizing. Holes are available where segments of the neglected boards have fallen away, and the few residual announcement ribs are canvassed in layers of confounded pictures. It's truly a fairly great passing examination of a world that is being rubbed out by later advanced substitutes, and furthermore a piece of center American that has been removed by bigger, more present day thruways that suck individuals far from them. In any case, regardless of the possibility that this all appears a touch shockingly unpretentious and profound, McDonagh certainly doesn't enjoy this sort of retrospection consideration for long. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri carries on with all the sort of quick paced mind that numerous the chief's affectionate fans will seek after - it simply does it with periodic notes of something more profound out of sight. Seconds after this scene with the announcements, for instance, Mildred is soon swaggering into Ebbing Advertising Company's office. In a renegade moderate mo she waltzes in, while music that proposes something much the same as an old-school Western shoot out is going to go down plays out of sight. But this time, just verbal shots are discharged, and soon Mildred is killing down at the organization's administrator in a progression of splendid jokes. The put downs this film are truly rather uncommon, and when two impressive saving accomplices come up against each other, there are few spots you'd preferably be than watching this film. From between this clever repartee, we find that Mildred wishes to contract the three boards - and she isn't hesitant to sprinkle the money to do as such. She hands streak cards to the administrator laying out what she needs them to state, and his reaction starts to give us a feeling that there is a more vile back story impacting everything. Next we slice to the announcements, and in an obscurely comic uncover including a nearby cop, we see the words 'Assaulted WHILST DYING' 'AND STILL NO ARRESTS?' 'For what reason NOT, SHERIFF WILLOUGHBY?' Thus starts the extraordinarily capable blend that this film accomplishes between noteworthy social evaluate, moving show, and close flawless comic drama. Justifiably, it will seem as if those things could not the slightest bit be perfect given the topic, however this film pulls it off in a way that feels somewhat like an obscurely themed novel. Inside Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, there appears a profound situated pity about the wrongs of the world, yet in the meantime there's always this resistant, practically ear-splitting screech of giggling against the haziness and give up on McDonagh's anecdotal world. This is precisely the diversion we find in the musings, activities and lives of Mildred and Sheriff Willoughby, as they gradually go to war over the instance of Mildred's fiercely killed little girl - something continually fed by the foundation nearness of the three signs. Also, to the extent premises go, this thought of a mother using three overlooked boards as a trick to guarantee that her little girl's passing goes unforgotten is truly rather splendid, and unquestionably emerges from a large portion of the other Main Competition passages up until now. In addition, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri actually never does what you would anticipate that it will do. With truly great innovativeness and fretfulness, it's always coming at you from left field with massively entertaining jests, or unforeseen character activities that you would never observe coming. Truth be told, it's practically as McDonagh has sat down and asked himself what might be an aggregate astonishment in each and every scene. Also, all things considered he has molded every one of the stuns and clowning around into something that is absolutely splendidly shaped and agreeable. It's this quality specifically that truly makes McDonagh's most recent a sparkling case for screenwriters all over the place. Craig Zahler’s ( Bone Tomahawk) latest feature is Brawl in Cell Block 99 a pulp/ grindhouse crime drama starring Vince Vaughn in one of the best roles he’s had in recent times. Vaughn plays married out of work former boxer Bradley Thomas recently laid off from an auto shop. Get Brawl in Cell Block 99 Blu-ray Release Date, Trailers, News & Reviews. Desperate to save his marriage to wife Lauren (Jennifer Carpenter) who has cheated on him, and to earn cash in order to get the two of them out of the dive home they’ve been living in, Bradley starts running drugs for old associate Gil (Marc Blucas), promising his wife he’ll only do it for a short time. Fast forward a few years and Bradley and Lauren are living the life of luxury in a big house and a baby on the way, Bradley now Gil’s right-hand man. Bradley is tapped to set up a new drug connection and the deal goes sideways, and the new guys end up in a shootout with the police, which sets Bradley against the new guys, saving the cops’ lives, but getting himself arrested. He ends up sentenced to seven years in prison and his wife Lauren is then kidnapped by a hitman (Udo Kier) who threatens their unborn child with an abortionist if Bradley doesn’t get himself transferred to a notorious prison in order to carry out a hit for a client to payback the debt he owes for the bad drug deal. After turning violent and getting himself transferred, Bradley meets up with a sadistic warden (Don Johnson) and must get himself into the secret torture ward known as Cell Block 99 to carry out his assignment, where he will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of his wife and child. Brawl in Cell Block 99 starts off slowly and seems at first like any other crime drama that eventually passes through a prison, but, boy, is not that. This is pure pulp revelry that doesn’t let up once it takes its twisted turn into the unabashed world of grindhouse cinema. Brutally violent and hammy, but never tipping over into the absurdly acted, Vaughn’s acting seethes and Don Johnson is a believably dangerous nemesis. Zahler bathes Brawl in Cell Block 99 in shadow and the imagery of S&M dungeons more than actual prisons in the entire second half of the film. The interludes of classic soul and funk allude to the exploitation films of the 1970s that are so obviously a big influence on this one and which Zahler so easily plays around with in a contemporary setting. If you want to see a riveting piece of pulp fiction that not directed by Quentin Tarantino, then Brawl in Cell Block 99 with its top-notch cast and unapologetic stomach churning brutality is the movie for you. 12 Photos The Video This film arrives on 4K Ultra HD in an HEVC 2160p (4K) encodement framed at 1.85:1. This is one of the rare Ultra HD discs that is not mastered in HDR (High Dynamic Range), joining only one other I have had the opportunity to review,, and another forthcoming Ultra HD review Mayhem, and a German import release of Neon Demon on 4K Ultra HD. The image doesn’t have the immediately apparent leap in quality over the Blu-ray without HDR and, depending on your screen size and viewing distance, you may not notice it, but on my 65” LG OLED65E6P at 6’ away, I see a definite improvement in clarity and sharpness. There’s also excellent depth of field and nuance in the shadows, although the color gamut is the same as that on the Blu-ray, which is also good, just not quite as crisp and filmic. The Audio The film comes with an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix that carries the anachronistic soul music soundtrack flawlessly giving the music good midrange punch and air. It also gives the fight sequences lots of low end punch and dialogue is clean and full. There are good atmospherics and some occasional solid sound effects in the surrounds. The Supplements There are only two special features included in what is a rather bare bones release. They do offer some interviews with cast and crew, which are cool to watch. • Blu-ray with Feature Film • Journey to the Brawl: The Making of Brawl in Cell Block 99 • Beyond Fest Q & A with Cast and Crew The Final Assessment Vince Vaughn is on fire in this riveting, brutal, unapologetic contemporary grindhouse crime drama. The 4K Ultra HD is lacking HDR but still looks top-notch. Brawl in Cell Block 99 is out on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack and Blu-ray December 26, 2017 from RLJE Films. An ex-boxer turned drug runner (Vince Vaughn) must fight his way out of an infamous prison against a sadistic warden (Don Johnson) and gangsters who want their revenge against him in order to save the life of his pregnant wife (Jennifer Carpenter) who is being threatened by a hitman promising to use an abortionist to do experimental procedures on her unborn child in this brutal, gritty contemporary grindhouse indie film from director S. Craig Zahler. The 4K Ultra HD looks top notch, but lacks HDR. Vince Vaughn Chain Gang Brawl in Cell Block 99 is a number of things. It begins as an economic fable. Vince Vaughn, quiet, monotone, but seething, loses his tow job as the economy bottoms out. To support his pregnant wife, Vaughn turns to crime, transporting drugs. The deal goes expectedly awry, and Vaughn becomes a sympathetic anti-hero who serves jail time for saving a number of cops during a shoot-out. Craig Zahler () isn’t done though. His film dissects the American prison system, pushing Vaughn into squalled conditions. No one cares for a murderer, even if said killings saved lives. Still later, Cell Block 99’s remorseful tone becomes a cruel morality play. Faces strip from their skulls. Heads separate from their bodies. Ideas of what’s right, if there’s any right in this at all, turn Cell Block 99 into a complex ethical dilemma. As with the ‘70s era prison thrillers Cell Block 99 emulates, Zahler employs copious levels of violence. A certain artificiality hangs over the prosthetics, further recalling a lost era of filmmaking. Yet, Cell Block 99 is an expressive tale, interrupted only by smooth R&B occasionally inset into the drama. It’s the only music; Cell Block 99 features no score. Cell Block 99 is reserved, acting out only as necessary, puncturing stretches of silence with cracking bones The camera often hangs on Vaughn. Zahler gets all he can from his star. Vaughn sits isolated in a cell, dim light streaming in from the window. He often seems lost in thoughts and caught in an inescapable trap. Few people in Cell Block 99 escape from this script without a moral blemish. Prison guards find glee in assaulting inmates; inmates take glee in assaulting guards. Action scenes allow the choreography to work in front of the camera, edits sparingly used. “Brawl” suggests an old-fashioned prison riot. That’s not the case. Cell Block 99 is reserved, acting out only as necessary, puncturing stretches of silence with cracking bones. Vaughn doesn’t enter the prison until the first hour nears its close. Cell Block 99 builds its character and empathy before setting him behind a steel door with only a sagging cot and stopped up toilet. Slowly, a literal and figurative descent toward madness ensues. Vaughn’s character isn’t inherently likable. He’s street smart. The back of his head features a dynamically colored cross tattoo, but he’s unwilling to injure or maim until necessary. Cell Block 99 imbues a play of human selfishness and masculine ideals – Vaughn must protect his wife at a distance, taking innocent bystanders with him in the process. That justifies the violence, and set in a prison only possible in cinema, if anyone dies, no one will care anyway. Video (4K UHD/Blu-ray) The two discs inside RLJ’s set pair together well: They look identical. Cell Block 99 is part of a rare breed. On 4K UHD, no HDR is included. Earlier this year, did the same, and since Cell Block 99 comes from a 2K finish, differences between UHD and Blu-ray reach negligible levels. It’s possible to make the argument Cell Block 99’s 4K disc offers slightly better definition. In close, the additional resolution adds a small touch of sharpness not available in the 1080p presentation. That’s not worth the extra cost though. Both discs offer the same color timing, mostly drowned in blues that impact flesh tones and environment. It’s a gaudy look. Cell Block 99 offers few striking primaries of note. Late in Cell Block 99, there’s a shift toward orange via underground lighting. Still, it’s overpowering and blocks out any other colors. A bit of crush impacts shadow details. Other times, black levels shift into muddy blues. One scene, as Vaughn makes a drug drop, turns shadow deals into a weird, glowing red. After some 2000 discs reviewed in the past decade, that’s one of the odder color gaffes to appear. Darker areas bring out noise and artifacts too. Pay attention to some background characters not in the set’s main lighting and it’s inevitable to see some swarming chroma noise or compression. Audio Both discs deliver DTS-HD 5.1, enough for the material if unimpressive. An early shoot-out sends the gunfire into the rear surrounds as Vaughn turns away. That’s a nice trick. Shots barely find their way into the subwoofer though, leaving this scene flattened. Most of Cell Block 99 acts the same, employing the low-end when a door is slammed or the soundtrack picks up. Even then, it’s mild and loose. Any other surround use comes from ambiance. Concrete walls of the prisons invite a number of echoes. Voices spread around the soundfield as do footsteps, appropriate for the conditions. Extras Bonus features lead off with Journey to the Brawl, a typical making-of running 15-minutes. In a rare move, a Q&A session from Beyond Fest is included in full without being parsed down by edits. It runs a half hour. Full disclosure: This Blu-ray was provided to us for review. Day 6 Bike Owner Testimonials “I had to completely give up bicycle riding due to arthritic neck coupled with bone spurs. The pain was unbearable. Accidentally found your company on line. Been riding for about a month. The sixth day of creation PROPHECIES of earth's sixth millennium and the rise of the Antichrist and his mark (of the beast). Learn about it here. Absolutely no pain. I am shocked. I am 74 years old and have my life back.” Edwin “The Day 6 bicycle reduces low back compression, places the diaphragm and respiratory cavity in their most effective position during aerobic function, maximizes optimal pelvic and hip mechanics, reduces back strain because of hamstring facilitation, and allows reciprocal activity to occur without compensating as one does on the traditional bike frame to manage balance. I recommend the Day 6 bike to my patients and to physical therapists attending my courses. The support system, adjustability feature and the mechanical engineering allows those patients with neck, shoulder, and back strain to workout without increasing headaches, fatigue, fibromyalgic symptoms, muscular trigger point pain and joint inflammation.” Ron Hruska, MPA, PT Postural Restoration Institute™, Director “I am continually amazed with my Day 6 bike. At 64 and overweight with chronic joint problems, I can’t comfortably walk one block, but I just got back from 40 minutes on my bike. The design is pure genius. Absolutely nothing hurts or is uncomfortable when I am riding. My bad back, hip and knee all are quiet and seem to enjoy the ride too. I have had this bike for about 5 years and love it more every time I ride it.” Katherine. Day 6 is the ultimate crank forward.
